Thus the grammatical gender of the word "spirit" is feminine in the Semitic languages such as Hebrew ("רוח"), in which the Old Testament was originally written, and in Aramaic, which was the language Jesus taught in, and which Papias of Hierapolis indicates the Gospel of Matthew was originally written in; in Greek, which the rest of New Testament was written in, the word for spirit is neuter ("πνεῦμα").
